Hiring the Right Contractor

Hiring a contractor can be stressful, especially if you’re planning a major renovation. Use the following guidelines to help you hire the right person for your next home project. These tips also apply if you’re hiring a tradesperson or service professional to tackle any project around the home. Get referrals. Ask your family, friends and neighbors for the names of contractors or trades professionals they’ve used and make a list of companies that serve your area. I work with reputable contractors and other professionals in our local area— so give me a call for a referral.

What to do if your information has been stolen?

Identity theft can happen to anyone. Since more people are going online to shop, bank, file taxes, etc., there’s an increased risk of savvy thieves stealing the personal information of millions of consumers. Even if you’re careful, a thief may be able to attain your information by hacking into the systems of larger businesses, as millions of people learned last year with the Equifax data breach.

Cyber breaches increased to 1,093 in 2016, up from 780 in 2015, with most of these breaches impacting medical/healthcare organizations, education, and government/military sectors.

As of October 2017, there were 1,056 breaches reported, which exposed more than 171 million records.

According to experts, stolen information can sell for more than $30 per identity on the black market.

However, in time and frustration alone, it’ll cost a victim much more than that. The stolen information allows thieves to open bank accounts and lines of credit, open new credit cards, get a driver’s license in your name, file taxes to steal your tax refund and more. What can you do if you find out your information has been compromised?

Real Estate Market Insights for 2018

What’s in Store for 2018? While it’s impossible to know for sure, experts analyze current trends to predict what may happen.

Home prices and values are expected to rise modestly.

Home prices have been increasing around the country, with cities such as Dallas, Portland and Seattle experiencing the largest year-over-year price gains.1 In fact, Washington has experienced the fastest rise in housing prices in the United States over the past few years.2 While the National Association of Realtors anticipates 2018 home prices will rise by 3.5 percent, Freddie Mac predicts they’ll increase 4.9 percent.3 This percentage may seem modest, but for cities such as Detroit, Las Vegas, Phoenix and San Diego, rising home prices may continue the 2017 trend of creating more pressure in the market.1 The good news is home values in 28 states have risen to above pre-crisis peaks and are at an all-time high.2

Rental prices are no longer increasing at the rate of home prices in most areas.4 Although the leveling off of rental prices may take some financial pressure off renters, for those thinking of buying, it’s a good time to turn their dream of homeownership into reality.

Learn how the Holiday Trees were saved on the Manhattan Beach Pier

Read the article by Scotty Claus in SouthBay Magazine about how a local business owner rescued a holiday tradition in downtown Manhattan Beach.

Manhattan Beach Pier Trees

Here is an excerpt:

“It was 2009 when (then) Mayor Richard Montgomery and I first discussed the idea of decorating the pier with living trees. We were at a holiday fundraiser, and The Living Christmas Company had donated the trees for the event. When I mentioned we could do the same for the Manhattan Beach pier and make it look like Narnia, Richard was immediately on-board.

The first year was rough. We carted over 70 trees onto the pier just as a major storm hit that weekend. I ran out to the pier at 5 a.m. to see that nearly every tree been knocked over and there was soil and trees everywhere. We bought bungee cords and strapped every one of them to the railing.”
